Notes on the pictures on this website

Most of the pictures on the website are digital pictures but some are older and are in the form of slides. The original slides used in these pages have been scanned into my computer and this can produce very good quality pictures if done at a very high resolution. However, a high resolution scan can take up massive amounts of disk space typically 5 megabytes each so due to the limited space available for this website I have compressed the slide images and the digital pictures quite significantly for display in these pages. The compression using the jpeg format can produce reasonable quality photographs in about 30 or 50 K bytes. Although the pictures are not as clear as the originals I think that they are acceptable for most uses. If, however, anyone wishes to receive an uncompressed image this could be arranged via email. All pictures copyright Paul Kneebone unless otherwise stated. High resolution pictures without the coptright overlay may be available for publication by prior agreement.

Under no circumstances should any of these pictures be published elsewhere without pre-arranged permission.

Also the photographs of the herbarium specimens may look dark and uncolourful but remember that the original specimens can be over 100 years old and are pretty dull and dusty to begin with. Considering all this I was exceptionally surprised at the results.

If you do not get the results you expect even accepting the above comments it may be that your PC is not set up correctly. Mine is set up for 32 bit colour and 1024 X 768 pixels.

As always I would be happy to receive your Emails with any comments about the pictures or even the colour scheme which I have modified following comments on the original scheme.
